Woven vs. Plush Blanket: What's the Difference?

A woven blanket and a plush blanket are made in two different ways, not just two different textures. A woven design is created by the fabric itself; a plush design is printed onto it. That difference affects how each one looks, feels, and works in a room.

How a woven blanket is made

A woven cotton blanket is made from 100% cotton, with the design built directly into the fabric as it's woven — there's no ink or printing involved. Edges are typically finished with fringe rather than a hemmed border. Because the design comes from the weave itself, colors sit slightly more muted than a printed design, and the texture has more visible structure.

These come in three sizes, labeled S/M/L (roughly 52″ × 37″, 60″ × 50″, and 80″ × 60″), which puts the larger sizes closer to wall-hanging territory than a typical throw.

How a plush velveteen blanket is made

A plush velveteen blanket starts as 100% polyester with a design printed in full color on one side, then finished with double-needle stitched edges rather than fringe. The fabric itself is soft, medium-weight velveteen — that's where the "plush" comes from — and the design sits on top of that texture rather than being woven into it.

These run smaller and lighter, in 30″ × 40″, 50″ × 60″ and 60″ × 80″, closer to a blanket you'd actually pull over yourself on a sofa.

Which one to choose

If you want something that reads as wall art or a statement piece — the kind of thing you'd hang the way you'd hang a wall tapestry — the woven cotton blanket's larger sizes and fringed edges do that better. If you want something soft to actually wrap up in, or a lighter gift that's easy to fold and wrap, the plush velveteen version fits that use more naturally.
